When a bathroom is freshly decorated, it looks great but it’s important to properly maintain any space to keep it looking its best. One of the most troublesome problems affecting the appearance of a room, and in some instances even causes health problems, is mould. In this blog, we’ll be showcasing how you can clean mould off walls effectively and even a couple of tips for how to avoid it in the first place.
What is mould?
In short, mould is a term used to describe a range of fungi. In the home, one of the most common types is black mould, a fungus that thrives in damp, humid areas. With lots of steam in the bathroom and kitchen, these are rooms most likely to be affected by mould.
When it settles, mould can cause unsightly discolouration of walls, wallpaper or windows so making sure it’s tackled early on is important. What’s more, if left too long, mould can also cause a range of respiratory issues.
How to clean mould off walls
Mould on walls clearly causes a lot of negative factors, but is it easy to remove? The answer, luckily, is yes! As long as it’s caught early on, mould removal is an easier task to complete than you might expect. These are three easy ways to clean mould off walls.
Mould sprays
There is a wide selection of specialist fungicidal mould treatment sprays available to buy from many high street retailers and online. In many cases, mould sprays are applied directly to the mould, left to break it up, and then wiped away. Before using any spray however, always read the instructions and wear all appropriate equipment.
Bleach
Quite often, there is a bottle of bleach in the cupboard under the sink and it can be used to clean mould off walls. Usually, the solution is mixed one part bleach with four parts water, then the affected area is gently scrubbed and thoroughly rinsed with clean water. Again, be sure to read all the relevant instructions first, and wear the correct kit including gloves.
Vinegar
Vinegar is another method of mould removal. To make your vinegar solution, mix a quarter cup of vinegar with two cups of hot water in a spray bottle alongside two tablespoons of sodium borate (also known as Borax). Spray the solution onto the mouldy area and scrub with a brush. Wipe away the mould with a spare towel then dispose of it. If required, spray the area again, leave it for ten minutes, then wipe away the mould with a different towel.
