Ensuite bathrooms are a great way of enjoying greater convenience in the home. These bathrooms are often a haven of peace and calm in an increasingly busy world, and while smaller than family bathrooms, they’re no less deserving of love and attention. In this blog, we’ll be showcasing five ensuite bathroom ideas which will help you transform the space into your very own private sanctuary.
Ensuite bathroom ideas
When planning your bathroom room renovation, be it a family bathroom, ensuite, or small shower room, ideas about the size, function and style should be considered. For ensuite bathrooms in particular, your first consideration should always be how best to layout your space…
1.Location, location, location
If you’re simply refreshing your bathroom, this section might not be for you. If, however, you’re planning a new ensuite bathroom, or refreshing an existing one, the first thing you should consider is planning out the space.
First, research the plumbing fixtures that most appeal to you. Look at the colours, materials and finishes, but most importantly, the sizes. Before purchasing, map out your options on the bathroom floor and find the optimal way to arrange them. You can use masking tape to easily indicate where each item might go. Once you have a good idea of what should go where, then you get to the fun part and put in your orders!
2.Play with proportions
Ensuite bathrooms are usually on the smaller side, but with a few simple steps you can make it feel more spacious. The easiest way to make an ensuite look bigger is by using light, airy colours. White, pale grey and even soft natural greens are all excellent examples. Large, backlit mirrors will also give the illusion of greater space.
One of the best ways to make an ensuite bathroom appear bigger however is to use vertical lines. In other small spaces, striped curtains or wallpaper can make it feel bigger but these options aren’t easily available for bathrooms. Waterproof wall panels, on the other hand, are the ideal choice. For the best results, add wainscotting style panels to the bottom half of the wall (where the vertical lines will draw the eye up), and paint the top half in a light, refreshing tone.
3.Floors and walls
When you have only a small space in which to express your own style, it's a great idea to invest in making your walls and floors standout. By significantly contributing to the overall aesthetic of a small bathroom, the room can quickly become a joyful expression of your unique personality.
For the floor, you can consider a diverse selection of options ranging from waterproof click vinyl systems in an array of wood finishes or stylish floor tiles. These tiles can be patterned or plain to best suit your requirements.
At the walls, you can consider the aforementioned combination of wainscoting and paint, but there are also purpose made shower panels. Suitable for around the bath / shower, or even the entirety of your ensuite, our dynamic range of Elemence Shower Panels is available in six designs, echoing the authentic and high end finishes of real stone. You can learn more about these beautiful products in our Elemence Shower Panels buyer’s guide.
4.Fixtures and fittings
Wall mounted toilets, compact sinks and corner showers will help you maximise the space in your ensuite bathroom. What’s also important however is how they synergise. Where possible, find options in a similar colour and finish to give your ensuite a unified, relaxing appearance.
When choosing your smaller fixtures and fittings (taps, shower curtain poles, mirror frames etc), look at options that compliment each other. Similar metallic shades will make an ensuite bathroom more harmonious. If they’re light metals, the glittering light will also make the room feel a little larger.
5.Storage solutions
In any small room - including ensuite bathrooms - storage is often tricky. That said, there are plenty of innovative solutions to help you make a home for all your toiletries, accessories and sundries.
An under-the-sink cupboard is always a wise choice. In here you can keep extra loo rolls, spare towels or even your bathroom cleaning products without encroaching on your floor space. Additionally, floating shelves provide extra space for both smaller functional and decorative items. We’re big fans of adding potted plants on floating shelves for a more nature-inspired aesthetic.
Adding hooks or pegs to the back of your ensuite bathroom door will also provide you with some extra versatility. These are great for temporarily hanging clothes on, but you can also find hanging laundry hampers saving on floor space for a large clothes basket.
Just because a bathroom is small doesn’t mean you can’t easily style it in a beautiful and comforting way. By following these ensuite bathroom ideas you’ll be able to refresh your space into something truly unique in less time than you might expect.
